Solo Mountaineering

Last Sunday, April 29th, I went up to Guanella Pass. I was up here about this time last year and almost everything was passable without snow shoes. Last year, all you'd need to get up Mt. Bierstadt was an ice axe and some common sense. This year was different. As I was driving up there road past Georgetown, I saw a sign that said "Road closed 7 miles ahead". I thought that should get me to the trailhead.

Nope! The road was impassable due to snow about halfway to the trailhead for Bierstadt. I parked the truck in a section that I thought I could turn around in and started hiking. It was about 3 miles to the trail head and the last half a mile felt like I was post holing the entire thing. I was tired enough to not want to try to climb Bierstadt when I got to the trailhead. But on a positive note, the views were awesome.
